Stress Reduction Through Music Therapy and Food!

As soon as my classmates and I entered high school, the amount of stress and pressure skyrocketed. My classmates and I were all very affected, and because of that, I started to think about what I could do to combat this problem.

When deciding what project to take on as my Girl Scout Gold Award project, this topic stood out to me as one of the most prevalent problems today. Through my project, I taught a course on Stress Reduction Through Music Therapy and Food, during Weston High School's "June Academy". June Academy is a two week period at the end of the school year, in which all students at WHS take non-academic classes.

This was a four day course in which two of the days were focused on Pie Therapy, and two days were focused on Music Therapy. Pie Therapy is a form of therapy which involves calming, repetitive movements while making pie dough. Music Therapy is a form of therapy which involves listening to relaxing music, as well as sounds of nature.

I learned so much from this course. It taught me how to teach high school students, and how to plan activities. It also taught me how to make a course curriculum, with the help of mentors. It also helped me to learn about how to be a better leader, and how to get my point across to others. In general, though long and exhausting, this was an amazing experience that has helped me so much!

2

"I liked how it was very much student led, with little lecturing and teacher direction, since a student led all the activities."

"It was so enjoyable and super stress free to take my mind off all the things happening at the end of school."

4

WHS Student, Course Participant

"The teaching was targeted to the students’ interests and therefore it was interesting to see a student teaching students rather than a teacher teaching students."
